The Lord of the Rings is a film trilogy directed by Peter Jackson, based on the fantasy novels written by J.R.R. Tolkien. The three films in the series are The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), The Two Towers (2002), and The Return of the King (2003). In a direct competition with the Harry Potter saga, it became an instant classic in cinema, and Peter Jackson rose as one of the best directors. The Return of the King even won an Oscar. The extended versions (I've seen them all) were also launched and released on cinema. Later, a trilogy about the hobbit was launched, with a similar success.
