Sony and its sad love story with portable consoles

As the news about a new portable console being lauched by Sony arise, I remembered the other portable consoles that Sony gave us and that most of us enjoyed as little gamers. I, personally, as Tomas Elias Gonzalez Benitez, think that it was a great idea to being able to play everywhere.

So I've decided to write this post about the others portable consoles of Sony, at the risk of getting nostalgic. I have played many of them: in the end, they are more affordable than the desktop ones, and at certain times in my life they have been very important. I'm looking forward to seeing the new announcement from Sony, but in the meantime, let's go through the history of handheld consoles.

A bunch of consoles

Sony is one of the biggest names in the gaming industry, and they have released some of the most popular gaming consoles of all time. Among their offerings are a range of portable gaming consoles, which have become popular with gamers who want to play their favorite games on the go. In this post, we'll take a look at some of the portable game consoles launched by Sony over the years.

PlayStation Portable (PSP)

The PlayStation Portable, or PSP, was Sony's first foray into the portable gaming market. It was first released in Japan in 2004 and was later released in North America, Europe, and other parts of the world. The PSP was a huge success for Sony, selling over 80 million units worldwide.

The PSP was powered by a 333 MHz processor and had a 4.3-inch screen with a resolution of 480x272. It also had a UMD (Universal Media Disc) drive for playing games, as well as a Memory Stick Duo slot for storing saved games and other data. The PSP was compatible with both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, allowing users to play games online with other PSP owners.

PlayStation Vita

The PlayStation Vita was Sony's successor to the PSP, and it was released in 2011. It featured a 5-inch OLED screen with a resolution of 960x544, making it one of the best-looking portable gaming consoles of its time. The Vita also had a touchpad on the back, which allowed for unique gameplay experiences in certain games.

The Vita was powered by a quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor and had 512MB of RAM, making it a significant step up in terms of processing power compared to the PSP. It also had a range of connectivity options, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and 3G.

PlayStation Portable Go

The PlayStation Portable Go was a variation of the PSP that was released in 2009. It featured a sliding design that allowed for the screen to be covered when not in use, making it more portable than the original PSP. The PSP Go also had 16GB of internal storage, which allowed users to store games directly on the device without the need for UMD discs.

Despite its unique design and improved storage options, the PSP Go was not as successful as its predecessor. It was criticized for its high price point and the fact that it was not compatible with all PSP games.

PlayStation TV

The PlayStation TV, also known as the PS Vita TV in Japan, was a microconsole that was released in 2013. It allowed users to play Vita games on their TV using a controller, as well as stream games from their PS4 to another TV in their home.

The PlayStation TV was a budget-friendly option for gamers who wanted to play Vita games on their TV without having to purchase the full handheld console. However, it was not without its drawbacks. The device did not support all Vita games, and some games did not work well with the controller.

And what's next?

Sony has released a range of portable gaming consoles over the years, each with its own unique features and capabilities. From the PSP to the PlayStation Vita and beyond, these devices have allowed gamers to enjoy their favorite games on the go. While some have been more successful than others, Sony's commitment to innovation and quality has made them a popular choice for gamers around the world.

The fact is that there are rumours of new portable console by Sony. However, insiders has reported that it wouldn't be a console, but a device linked to your PS5, that would allow remote playing.

What do you think about this option?

The Lord Of The Rings: a classic on fantasy

The Lord of the Rings is a film trilogy directed by Peter Jackson, based on the fantasy novels written by J.R.R. Tolkien. The three films in the series are The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), The Two Towers (2002), and The Return of the King (2003). In a direct competition with the Harry Potter saga, it became an instant classic in cinema, and Peter Jackson rose as one of the best directors. The Return of the King even won an Oscar. The extended versions (I've seen them all) were also launched and released on cinema.  Later, a trilogy about the hobbit was launched, with a similar success. And more recently, a new series, The Rings of Power, continued the legacy of The Lord of the Rings.  What is The Lord Of The Ring about? (in case there is someone that still doesn't know) The Lord of the Rings films tell the story of Frodo Baggins, a hobbit from the Shire, who is entrusted with the task of destroying the One Ring, a powerful artifact created by the Dark Lord Sauron.
